Basic Estonian Vocabulary: List of the 1000 Most Common Words

Estonian belongs to the Uralic family of languages. It is closely related to Finnish and distantly related to Hungarian.

To produce this list of the most common Estonian vocabulary words, we analyzed an extensive collection of documents written in Estonian, mainly news articles. Because Estonian is a highly inflected language, we had to convert words to their dictionary form before counting them and sorting them by frequency.

Estonian is a genderless language, meaning it doesn’t use grammatical gender. So, for instance, the English pronouns he and she translate to the same pronoun, ta, in Estonian.

Many of the essential Estonian vocabulary words are of Uralic origin. But nearly one-third of Estonian words come from Germanic languages, partly due to the Germanic crusades during the middle ages.

Double vowels are one of the characteristic features of Estonian spelling; they frequently appear in Estonian spelling as they indicate long vowels.
